A Trip of the Town of Nový Jičín [ Turistický produkt ]

Nový Jičín, centrum, letecký snímek
Nový Jičín is an ideal starting point for trips into its nearby as well as remoter surroundings, into places full of historical sights as well as into the mountains - Moravskoslezské Beskydy. The town offers its visitors abundant possibilities of enjoyment of sport. The whole region is interwoven with marked hiking trails, topographically processed cycle paths and informative nature trails.

Not far from the centre of the town you can visit the modern premises of the indoor and outdoor swimming pool with a modern spiral chute. These premises contain even a covered hall, where local basketball players play their championship games. Nový Jičín does not lack even a sport stadium, tennis courts, bowling, a covered winter stadium, and a hall with squash, tennis and badminton courts.

The Urban Conservation Area of Nový Jičín
We will start our trip of Nový Jičín with a sightseeing tour of its historical centre. First we will take a look at Masaryk Square, which undoubtedly belongs among the most impressive squares in our country.

One of the most distinctive houses in the square is the building of the town hall, which was radically rebuilt in 1929-1930; now it is the seat of the Municipality. You will also surely notice the unique New-Renaissance building of the Old Post Office with its characteristic arcade loggias. Other interesting buildings in the square are the White Angel House, which has been a seat of a pharmacy continuously since 1913, and Loudon’s House, where the famous general Loudon died. The middle of the square is graced with a plague column with a statue of Virgin Mary and a fountain with a sculptural group of Dancing Peasants dressed in the German Kravaře national costume. The overall appearance of the square is intensified by arcades, which have been preserved on all its four sides, and by the late gothic tower of the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin.
The historical centre of the town of Nový Jičín was declared to be an urban conservation area in 1967.

Besides the square, another dominant of the town is Žerotín Castle, nowadays the seat of the Museum of the region of Nový Jičín. In its halls there is a permanent exhibition of hats, which provides an outline of the development of hat industry in Nový Jičín, as well as other regular museum exhibitions.

Culture
Every year various culture and social events take place in Nový Jičín. The most important ones include the Burning of Witches, which is always held on 30/4, and Nový Jičín Summer during the months of June, July and August, when concerts, theatre performances, sport fixtures and events for children are held mainly in Masaryk Square.

In the course of years, the most prominent culture event has become the traditional Town Festival held always in the historical centre of the town at the beginning of September. From Saturday morning to late night hours the town sees a manifold programme, which starts with a parade of participants dressed in historical costumes. During the whole day town markets are held, various handicrafts are shown, knights, jugglers, fakirs, and dancers perform, and a lot of theatre and music performances take place. The evening programme always culminates with grand fireworks.

Surroundings
Nový Jičín has beautiful surroundings. Nature lovers will find a forest park of Skalky and a water dam of Čerťák in the outskirts of the town; besides swimming they can even practice the fishing sport there. Skiers can use the services of a ski hut, which stands under the peak of Svinec Hill, where the ski club’s downhill course with artificial snowing up and night lighting starts.
